Statement of Faith
Based on Charlotte Mason’s writings in The Original Homeschooling Series, articles, and Meditations, art by the masters, and the Anglican Book of Prayer.
Charlotte Mason’s philosophy aligns with God’s Truth in Holy Scripture and provides a landscape where we may be educated by God, our fellow man, and the created world. Charlotte Mason’s perspective, and subsequent philosophy, was based on her deep understanding of Holy Scripture and how to apply it faithfully.
Charlotte Mason’s 20th Principle states,
“We allow no separation to grow up between the intellectual and ‘spiritual’ life of children, but teach them that the Divine Spirit has constant access to their spirits, and is their continual Helper in all the interests, duties, and joys of life.”
The fresco at the Spanish Chapel connected to the Santa Maria Novella in Florence, Italy,“The Triumph of Saint Thomas Aquinas” and the “Allegory of Christian Learning.” Charlotte Mason visited this fresco in 1893 and used it to tell us of the ‘The Great Recognition Required of Parents.’
It is our duty as parents to train our children in the knowledge of God, and our personal loyalty, passionate loyalty to Christ, our King. (Home Education) We endeavor to bring each child into the “light and warmth and comfort of the presence of God,” as the Holy Spirit works in all that we are. (Parents and Children) Charlotte Mason wrote chiefly about education, child training, and parenting, but spiritual matters were also a driving force in her method. This is the life and hope of her method, and we must strive to work in cooperation with the Holy Spirit.
“I am, I can, I ought, I will”
The motto of the P.N.E.U. upholds the capacity all of us have for identity in Christ and the will to do what is right. “I want, am made for, and must have a God.” (Ourselves) Charlotte Mason expects students to read scripture, meditate, and pray to promote communion with God. Studies serve for delight! How delightful it is to come into contact with the Living Water of Life in our school lessons.
